FINCA LA ERMITA

The natural stone Finca  La Ermita is reached by driving between groves of orange trees for about 2 km. along the road that leads from the charming town of Artà to the Eremita de Betlem. The house belongs to a British rock musician and has an accordingly artistic interior without losing any of its practicality. 6 people can sleep here in comfort. Smoking is not allowed inside the house.

The Finca has extensive grounds of fig, olive and carob trees that have been left as much as possible in their natural state and from here the eye sweeps over the seemingly unending hills of the Sierra de LLevant. The guaranteed peace can only be disturbed by the sound of sheep bells or the local cock crowing to keep a jealous check on his hens at daybreak. On entering the house a pleasing living/dining area with an open fire place lies to the right of the entree. The room is flooded with light from the generous window front. When the sun is too strong during the hot summer months the shutters can be closed lending the room its own rather special, broken light. Behind the living/dining area you will find the very attractive and unique kitchen that could well inspire one or two ideas for one s own home! A cooker, a fridge and all other necessary electrical equipment are to be found here and a washing machine is in a room behind.

On going back to the entrance area you enter a passage where a number of doors access the terrace and pool areas. The passage itself leads to two of the bedrooms. One bedroom has a French sized double bed and an en suite bathroom. The other also has a bathroom en suite and contains two single beds that can be put together as double beds if wished. There is also a guest toilet in this floor.

From the ground floor you go up to the first floor via an architecturally, very interesting staircase. Before entering the master bedroom you pass through a small gallery with a floor to ceiling window allowing a stunning view of the expansive landscape outside. The suite/bedroom on this floor has a French sized double bed, a walk in wardrobe and an en suite bathroom with both a bath and a shower. It also has its own terrace and the view from here is, as elsewhere, unforgettable. The finca has been designed with relaxation in mind. Beside the peaceful surroundings there is a large swimming pool where there is nearly always a pleasant breeze even on the hottest of summer days. The house also has central heating making a stay here during the cooler months of the year just as comfortable. Electricity is provided by environmentally friendly solar power and a generator.

The centre of Artà can be reached in just a few minutes by car. Here it is possible to visit the famous church of San Salvador that lies above old walls of the town as well as the market square where a large market is held on Tuesdays. On the first Sunday of every month there is a flea market and in August the patron saint of the town is honoured with a fiesta. The town has an active cultural life with amongst other things its own theatre offering a varied programme that includes music events and films. The little theatre café is also a very nice place to enjoy a cup of coffee. Artà also offers excellent shopping facilities for the daily necessities and has numerous restaurants. In the main shopping precinct as well as in the streets nearby there are lovely little bars and many delightful shops and galleries where you will find artisan pieces, jewellery, fashion, household accessories and delicatessen shops offering local products, such as salt, olives, unusual vinegar varieties and much more.

A visit to the Eremita de Betlem, a hermitage founded in 1805 and where nowadays only a few monks live will be justly rewarded. It lies 280 metres above sea level in the Artà massif. The building materials that come from Soller where brought around by sea and then transported up the mountainside by donkeys. The monastery chapel is open to visitors and on the 1st May there is an annual pilgrimage. The drive along the narrow, serpentine road that leads there is quite an experience as are the dramatic views to be had once there.
