FINCA ANTIGUA
The notable, natural stone Finca Antigua is essentially a group of buildings comprising the main house an separate “casita” and work rooms around which a number of different patios and terraces have been built. The finca lies in the rolling hills of the countryside near Artá where there is little to disturb other than the sound of sheep bells. Up to five people can sleep in the main house and two further guests will find room in the casita. The house is entered via a broad stone staircase that brings the visitor to the antique, wooden front door through which you step into house. On the left there is the roomy, individual and well-appointed kitchen with high quality kitchen equipment and a small eating area. Cooking is done on a ceramic surface and there is of course a dishwasher. To the right of the entrance the ample wooden dining table invites dining in style.
Directly ahead there is a forecourt from where you enter one of the bedrooms. The room has a 120cm wide bed and an en suite bathroom with shower. Behind the dining area lies another spacious bedroom with a 140cm wide bed. This bedroom has its own dressing room and an en suite with a hydro-massage shower and bidet. A further bedroom is to be found next door this time with a 130cm wide bed. A pebbled stairway leads up to a very pleasing salon with a fireplace and comfortable seating arrangements. The special feature of this room is a huge wooden beam from the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona that was partly destroyed by fire in 1994. From the windows of the salon there are stunning views to be had of the surrounding countryside as well as of some of the charming details outside such as: stone basins, wells and old, agricultural tools that are all part of the finca’s particular character. A further stairway leads into the airy and attractively decorated casita that contains a bedroom with a 130cm wide bed but no bathroom. The bathrooms are all in the main house. The casita can also be accessed via the ground floor courtyard. Throughout the house there is beautiful stone flooring and also some exquisite pieces of furniture. The owner, who originally held an antique shop in Artá, has used her flair and taste in the decoration of the house and there are a number of lovely paintings and beautiful pieces of furniture to be enjoyed. The house has free Internet, satellite TV and central heating and in the third building there is a laundry room with a washing machine.
On the 21,000m2 grounds there is a large swimming pool with its own whirlpool and a terrace for sunbathing. Additionally there is: a small pond a, lovely old water reservoir, a cactus garden and a meadow of fig and almond trees. There are number of different sitting areas with charming garden furniture (no plastic to be seen here anywhere), where the sundrenched hours can be pleasantly whiled away.
The finca lies just under a mile away from the old fortified town of Artá with its famous church, San Salvador. A large weekly market is held on the market place on Tuesdays, there is a flea market here on the first Sunday of every month and in August, it is the main venue for the fiesta in honour of the town’s patron saint. The town is culturally active and has its own theatre where music events and cinema screenings take place alongside theatre performances and the theatre café is also a very nice place to have a coffee. Also worth a visit are Capdepera, where the historic fortifications above the town can be seen from a distance and Cala Ratjada with its attractive harbour. A number of attractive beaches are all about 15 minutes drive away. Worth particular mention is the natural beach that stretches between the coastal villages of Colonia de Sant Peré and Son Serra de Marina that is never overfilled even in the high summer season. Cala Torta should also be given a mention alone for the wonderful views to be had on the drive down.
Artá itself has good shopping facilities and many restaurants, cafés and bars. In the pedestrian zone and on the side streets there are also a number of art galleries and lovely little boutiques offering all kinds of tempting things to buy, from fashion accessories to delicious local products such as salt, oils and unusual vinegar variations.
